How often should you schedule virtual visitation?

On Behalf of | Sep 19, 2024 | Family Law

Virtual visitation allows whichever co-parent is not residing with their children – on any given day – to stay connected with them via video calls, messaging and other online platforms. Determining the ideal frequency for virtual visitation can be challenging. A child’s age, the ins and outs of a family’s co-parenting arrangement, etc. could all influence how best to time these interactions.

If you and your ex co-parent, there are several key considerations that you’ll want to keep in mind when crafting or revising virtual visitation schedules. These include:

Age and development of your child

The age and developmental stage of your child should play a significant role in determining the frequency and duration of virtual visits. For younger children, such as toddlers and preschoolers, shorter but more frequent video calls are usually more effective. A few 10-15 minute sessions – either daily or spread throughout the week – can help you all maintain strong bonds without overwhelming your child.

For school-aged children and teenagers, longer and less frequent sessions may be more feasible. Scheduling two or three virtual visits per week, each lasting 30-60 minutes, for example, could provide meaningful interaction without intruding on the child’s schoolwork and social activities.

The desirability of consistency and routine

Consistency is often ideal when it comes to virtual visitation. Establishing a regular schedule can help to create a sense of stability and predictability for your child. Whether you choose daily, weekly or bi-weekly sessions, sticking to the agreed schedule (when possible – every parent knows that flexibility comes with “parenting territory”) is important.

Predictability will allow your child to anticipate and look forward to time with whichever parent is not currently present, potentially making virtual visitation a more positive experience.

Your child is unique. Your family is unique. As are you. If you keep in mind what they need and what is workable for everyone, chances are, your schedule will work out well overall.
